Overview

Assists workers engaged in fabrication of structural or sheet metal products by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

  • Lifts, positions, and removes workpieces from machines to assist in fitting and welding.
  • Holds tape and marks reference points to assist in layout.
  • Loads, stacks, and transports stock, tools, dies, and work in process by hand or truck. 
  • Attaches rope or grappling equipment to workpieces to prepare for moving by forklift.
  • Cleans and scrapes metal preparatory to fabricating, painting, or shipping.
  • Paints metal stocks.
  • Picks up and trucks scrap from work areas.
  • Cleans work area, machines, and equipment.
  • Disperses material needed to complete projects to fabricators.
  • Inspects equipment and creates hot work permits needed for welding job.
  • Maintains a clean and organized inventory area to promote safety and ease of use.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
  • Performs other routine duties.

 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.                                   

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Driver's License
  • Hot work permit certification is a plus
  • Forklift certification is a plus

Other Skills and Abilities                                                     

  • Ability to speak, read and write in English.

Other Qualifications:                                               

  • Knowledge in pipe schedules, types of flanges, and structural steels is a plus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
